The Orchid Factory

Thanks for the post from Sylvester Campbell

There are only so many electric companies in Dallas to choose from and I’m about at my wits end with paying out the wazoo for electricity. The problem is that my husband has decided in the past year to take up growing orchids, HUNDREDS of orchids, so now we’ve got all these massive fluorescent lights on in our garage 24 hours a day. I think our neighbors assume it’s something more sinister but nope, it’s just a double-insulated garage with orchids coming out every seam. I don’t know when Jim decided he was going to be a botanist but at the end of the day I’ve learned over the 20 years we’ve been married it’s best if you just let him do what he wants. He’s going to do it anyway and things are a lot more pleasant around here without me screaming at him all the time. But you know, this thing is really get expensive between all the lights and the expensive fertilizers he’s buying (because, of course, everything has to be all-organic in Jim’s world) and all the time he’s putting into this that he’s not working. I love my husband, I really do, but sometimes his hobbies get a bit…obsessive? I don’t know if he’s planning on one day opening a nursery or something but until the time comes when we can start making money off these flowers I think I’m going to have to reign him in a bit. He does seem to be really good at it and I would be totally supportive of him opening an online store or even selling his product to growers around here but he’s got to take that next step otherwise we’re going to have to chill out a little with all the money we’re spending. We’re not exactly made of money, Jim! He knows this – he’s the one who said I should quit my job to raise our kids.

Fox Sports Can’t Bully Dish Network

Dish Network and Fox Controversy

A very interesting media situation is currently going on in the Atlanta area of Georgia. It was just last year, when Fox Sports tried to throw some outrageous rate increases on Dish Network’s doorstep; but the popular satellite company wasn’t falling for it. In turn, Fox Sports demanded their programming shows to be taken down. So Dish took them down and explained the situation to their paying customers. The advertisers didn’t like what Fox Sports was doing and started demanding some refunds on the advertising packages they had already bought. After all, without Dishnetwork carrying the Fox Games, there would be a lot less viewers seeing the ads on television. It was becoming a big headache for the folks at Fox Sports, so they quickly reached a settlement with the satellite company.

Now fast forward to the current situation and you won’t believe what Fox is trying to pull this time. A local TV station in the Atlanta area, called Peachtree TV, had purchased the rights to show about 1/3 of the Atlanta Braves baseball games in 2013. So the fans of the Braves were going to get to see their favorite baseball team playing on TV all season long. That was until the guys over at Fox Sports decided to get a little greedy. Seeing the big revenues coming in from their MLB Games, they wanted to buy the games away from Peachtree TV. Fox Sports made a very generous offer and Peachtree Television accepted it. So now Fox has just about all the games for the Atlanta Braves, but they had to over pay a little for the new set of games they got from the local station in Atlanta.

Here is where the problems starts. Fox Sports looks down and sees what they had to pay for the games, so to get their money back on these “over paid” games they bought away from Peachtree TV, they decided to pass the rate increases to the cable and satellite companies. Comcast Cable and Direct TV simply saw the bill from Fox Sports and decided to pay it. They would just take these higher priced games and work the extra costs into the monthly bills of their customers. So as you can see, who is really picking up the tab for Fox Sports greed and their willingness to over pay for these MLB Games? It’s the customers with Direct TV and Comcast Cable that is ultimately getting the bill.

Dish Network looked at the situation a little differently. They saw these games already on TV and at a good price. Since Peachtree TV is a station they offer in the Atlanta market, the fans of the Braves would get to see their team play. That was until Fox Sports decided to get greedy and actually over-paid to get the games on their network. So when they tried to send their bill to the Dish Network Company, they got a good chuckle out of it. Dish saw what Fox Sports was really doing. Now Dish could have easily accepted the terms and costs and put these games on TV. All they had to do, was follow their other satellite competitor’s path and pass the rate on to their customers.

Luckily Dish made a stand and I am very proud of them. I love the Atlanta Braves and I watch them every game. Especially this year, with the new arrival of the Upton Brothers, new third baseman Chris Johnson off to such a hot start, the pitching staff looking solid, and the amazing play of the bench, especially from Evan Gattis. It’s been one of the most exciting years in a long time, in Braves Country. I love watching a baseball team hit home runs. Every member of the Braves line-up can go deep. B.J. Upton hit in the 8th spot last night and he had 31 homers last season. That should tell you a little bit, about this team’s power ability. What Braves fan would not want to be watching them play in 2013?

Evan Gattis, Freddie Freeman, Jason Heyward

It’s hard as a fan to support Dish Network’s decision, but it is the right move. We must make a stand and stop these outrageous TV fees; that only go higher and higher each year. If you want a TV service that is looking out for you and cares about your money; then Dish Network is the company for you!

Its never easy to make a stand. It can be even more difficult when it isn’t a popular move. Sure, there is a lot of Braves fans calling the Dish Network number to complain about their baseball games being blacked-out. Fox Sports is even trying to put the blame on Dish too, but it isn’t them to blame. The blame fully rests on the shoulder of Fox Sports. Their greed to over pay for these games and then not be willing to pay out of their own pocket (for their own decisions) is where the root of the problem is. Thankfully we have an American Company that sees this and is willing to make a stand for the long term benefits of their customers. It would be very easy for Dish to pay the bill and pass the charges on to their customers. Direct TV had no problem in doing this. If you have the extra money and willing to let Fox Sports get away with moves like this; then by all means go call your local cable company or the Directv Guys.

As for the loyal supporters of the Dish Network company, we will win in the end. Heck, we are already doing that. We currently have more TV Channels than the Direct TV customers and we pay a lower monthly bill. Also, there is ways around this Braves Ban created by Fox Sports.

1. Usually the game will re-air right after the Live Taping and the post game shows have expired. Take a nap during the actual game and turn the TV on, when the encore version comes on. You might miss an inning or 2, due to time constraints, but you get to watch the game and for a cheaper price.

2. Rain Delays and Extra Innings….games that are delayed for weather is really some good news. The blackout times are preset in to place, so it doesn’t update if the game is being delayed. Your TV will only go down for 2 and a half hours. After that, you can watch the end of games on TV, if there is a long weather delay or if the game goes into extra innings.

3. There are places online where you can watch MLB Games for free. Even the Atlanta Braves can be seen online and it is totally free, if you know where to go. Do searches through the search engines. Also, try to learn new ways on how to click away ads; which might be blocking an online video screen.

Relax fans of Braves Nation! Dish Network is doing a good thing. It isn’t too hard to get around these blackouts and with a little luck, the advertisers will put enough pressure back on Fox Sports and Fox will cave-in again. If you’re an advertiser on Fox Sports Programming, please be aware that your viewers have been cut in half in the Atlanta viewing markets; which also consist of bordering states too. Alabama, Tennessee, North & South Carolina, and the Northern Florida areas all make up the TV viewing areas of the Atlanta Braves. The Dishnetwork members who are also Braves fans, go much further than the borders of Georgia. Please keep that in mind, if you are currently paying for a TV ad on Fox Sports. Ask Fox Sports for some refunds too; since the Atlanta Market is not able to view your television commercials.

Go Braves! Thank you Dish Network!

Favorite Cartoon Animals

While growing up, I use to love watching cartoons. I would sit close by the television every Saturday morning, to watch my favorite cartoons. Kids today don’t really know about Saturday morning cartoons. This is because there is about a dozen cartoon channels on television today and they show animated shows all day long. So a kid in the 21st century can turn on the tube and watch a cartoon anytime of the day or any day of the week. Back when I was a kid, we only had the cartoons on Saturday mornings to watch. It made cartoons more special, since you did have only one day a week to watch them.

Now many of the cartoons from the past and the ones they make today are about animals. Most of us know the legendary animal cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Tom & Jerry, and Daffy Duck. I could actually name a lot more animal cartoons from the past, because it seems like most of them are. Now I’m not sure if Sponge Bob Square Pants or the Smurfs would be an animal cartoon, but they are certainly “animal-like” cartoons.

It would be tough for me to name my favorite animal cartoon of all time. I have so many favorite cartoons I use to enjoy watching, this is a tough topic for me. Do you have a favorite animal cartoon? I know the mouse has always been popular in cartoons. Just off the top of my head, I can name several mouse cartoons, like Mickey Mouse, Mighty Mouse, Speedy Gonzalez, and of course Jerry, the mouse that was always running from Tom the cat. Perhaps the mouse could give the dogs and cats a run for their money, in the most used animal in cartoons. I would assume the dog is number 1, followed by the cat. The mouse cartoons could very well rank 3rd on the list, as the most common animal character. I was just curious to see if others could clearly name 1 or 2 of their favorite animal cartoons of all time, or if it’s just a tough question to answer.

7 Running Regulations To Learn By Heart

Everything in life involves dealing with so many regulations, even when running. Despite runners strictly adhering to the rules and regulations that come with this strenuous, yet enjoyable and fulfilling activity, everything will still zero in on doing your own thing.

1. Do What Suits You

Running is supposed to be a sport or activity characterized by freedom. You see, there are no hard-knock rules in running. You may simply stride off when you run, overrunning all your co-runners; or simply take things slow setting your own space and pace; or better yet a combination of both by doing stops at certain point of the road. Bottom line is, a runner can do his own thing when running.

2. Focus On Targeting A Place

Running can be so exhausting, yes. But if there is one thing to keep you running despite the exhaustion and thirst; or the muscle cramps and leg pains, it is the achievements that you might reap in running. Almost all fun runs or marathon races have crowded starting lines so you can just imagine the competition and that gives you an idea of how you will more or less fare in the event. The important thing is to aim for a place. That way, you will not only excel in this sport you chose, but you will develop a sense of being goal-driven as well.

3. Distractions While Running

Sometimes, what runners do is chat to push them into finishing the run. Getting a good exercise is already enough for them, so they just chat their last few laps back into the finish line with their time ran extremely far from the ideal. This can sometimes be distracting to other runners.

Among other things that could distract a runner are somebody else’s dangling keys, very loud music from their I-pods and the beeps of a heart monitor device. If you do not want any of these noise, then just simply overrun them and lead the run.

4. No Pets While Running

Pets are meant to be walked, they are not meant to be running companions especially when it is a race or a fun run event. It is in fact discouraged by event organizers to bring along your dogs to races, because chances are if they are not leashed properly, they would block the way of the other runners and might even give them a trip or two.

5. Take Extra Cautions

Yes, there are several aid stations located on both sides of the road; however, it would be best to have an extra ounce of prevention to avoid possible accidents and injuries while running. It does not help that just because there are aid stations around, you are free to inflict injury on yourself as you run. Be careful at all times.

6. No Room For Whining

Sometimes there are runners who, in extreme exhaustion, will whine while running towards the finish line. Isn’t it just irritating to hear them? They whine about how this running is tearing his knees; or how after the event, he will shift to biking instead, and several other whines. Please, be a runner not a whiner.

7. Just Run All The Way To The Finish Line

While to many, headphones and loud chatting are truly annoying, to others they are nothing. There are some people who do not even care if someone talks so loudly and then overruns her. Competition is not just their cup of tea. For them, running is about finishing off with what you began, and not necessarily the first one to finish. Whatever holds true to you, just slip away to the finish line as fast as you can!

Proper Athletic Running Techniques

Jogging and sprinting are considered as forms of athletic running. This type of running can burn up to 50 percent more calories per mile than walking, making it a very effective means of exercise. A lot of young people consider running a very refreshing form of exercise. But in athletic running, you must be aware of the proper ways to do it for your enjoyment and satisfaction and to prevent hurting yourself.

However, athletic running requires that you should move with the correct posture. Wrongly done, athletic running can cause sore knees, shin splints, pulled muscles, twisted ankles or stress fractures.

To avoid these injuries, you have to follow good athletic running techniques. These techniques also enable you to run safely and comfortably. Some of the newest Under Armour running shoes are now built to help provide support for various running styles.

First, locate your center of mass. This is usually your torso. Leaning slightly forward places your body on the front side of your foot.

This action prevents you from heel’s landing, thus taking advantage of the reflexive action of your foot. Furthermore, leaning forward will be easy for your body to prevent landing badly when you stop suddenly.

For athletic running, you should also have a good posture. This means you should not slouch. By having a good upright posture, your spine will support your entire upper torso effectively while your lower limbs move.

Experienced runners run at 90 strides or 180 steps in one minute. This is the recommended speed , translated as energy expenditure while running. You should strive to reach this pace. When you go at a lower stride, it can cause energy to be released in movements other than resisting air friction.

In athletic running, people think that the legs should move like a pendulum. Your leg swings in front, utilizing muscular strength to regulate the swing and to bring it backward. Then you use muscular power again to cease the backward movement of the leg to accelerate forward. This is actually inefficient.

Therefore, in athletic running, a circular motion of the legs that is centered on your torso is more efficient. Your foot motion forms an imaginary circle, capturing the most of the kinetic energy. The way how a Kenyan runner runs is the best example of using circular motion of the legs. The high lift of his heel is achieved by the angular momentum of his feet without using a lot of muscle power.

By having a good posture, a slight forward lean and a circular movement of your legs, you are now ready for the athletic running!

Mailboxes and Address Plaques for the Home

Home Style Mailbox

Depending on what neighborhood you are in, the types of mailboxes can range from the very stylish; to the most weird and bizarre boxes you have ever seen. As a former mailman with the U.S. Postal Service, I have seen and worked with my share of mailboxes. Some neighborhoods will have the residential address plaques with a wall mounted mailbox next to the front door. Usually if one home has it set up this way; then the other homes in the neighborhood or on the same street, will have a similar mail and address set-up. Most commonly use set up in my area of the World, is just a standard mailbox at the end of the driveway. The mail delivery drivers like these mailboxes the best, because they can drive from box to box and don’t have to get out of their mail delivery trucks.

Unique Neighborhood Mailboxes & Address Signs

I really get a kick out of some of the local designs, where homeowners put on their thinking caps to design a address sign (address plaque) or mail box. Just north of my current home, there is a home near a busy highway with a real unusual look. They have taken an ordinary mailbox and hoisted it in the air about 15 foot high. Not exactly sure how the local post office delivers their mail, but I’m sure they figured out something to do. This tall mailbox has become quite a tourist attraction and people will drive miles and miles, just to see a 15 foot post, with a common mailbox on top of it. They don’t have no fancy mailbox or whitehall address plaques around it. They picked out the most common, silver mailbox you could possibly get.

Do you have a story or picture to pass along, of another unusual mailbox, address plaque, or front yard sign? I would love to see it and I’m sure my blog readers would like to take a glance at it too. Please be sure to reply back with any pictures or photos you have and I will add them to a new blog post (with mainly pictures in it). If I can ever win the lottery or get rich, my dream home will have a variety of personalized address plaques around the home. One for the house, driveway, barn, the barn road, and whatever other building structures I have on the property; will have their own custom plaques too. Don’t forget those photographs please! I can’t wait to see some unusual signs and mailboxes!

*By the way folks, both of the photos on this blog post is from a website; which can hook you up with a great variety of unique signs and mail boxes for the home. Check them out and let me know which designs you like best, from their large inventory of pictures online. Thanks!

Search engine marketing

In the world of online business the goal is getting visitors to your site, but more importantly the right visitors. Take the social network sites like MySpace and Facebook for example. They built the site that would attract young college age kids to share and create their own space online. Originally MySpace was developed for unknown bands to create a presence and share their music with new fans. Their content was constantly changing and the customers were driving that change. While these sites were largely grown through word of mouth, most online businesses will need the correct Search Engine Optimization techniques to help you get noticed in the search engines. You need to develop loyal customers that find value in your offerings, and then will come back and tell their friends.

Kramer where did you go?

After all the press he got on this one moment where has Kramer gone. Could it be that the Season 7 DVD no longers needs additional press? Kramer please let us know where you are?

In a recent video release Michael Richards was seen berating and tossing racial slurs at a audience member during one of his comedy standup acts. While the entire context of the show and the incident are unknown, the video looks to make Cosmo Kramer out to be racist. Is He? My thought on this is maybe so, but I can’t believe that he is any threat. What got my attention was his appearance on Letterman via Phone/Satellite with Jerry Seinfeld in an attempt to apologize. While Kramer looked to be sincere and torn up over the remarks that he had made, the audience chuckled, and seem to be waiting for the punch line. You could tell he was very uncomfortable, and even Jerry chimed in saying this is “not funny”. The public only knows one Michael Richards as Kramer from the hiti comedy series “Seinfeld” Which so happens is releasing their ” Seinfeld Season 7 DVD” HMMM! Is this uncanny timing or could it be a great marketing idea. Seinfeld - Season 7 The rant was just Kramer venting against a member of the audience and he got so upset that he exploded. In an effort to shut them up he tried to go after their race. It is no different than when you or I get in an argument that is so heated, you start going after the personal attributes of the person, and then regret it later. We have all said things that we wish we could take back later. I don’t see this as any different. The only difference is that this is one of the Seinfeld characters, and it happens to be on the launch of a new DVD. Kramer was trying to apologize on the Letterman show, by stating that he did not want his actions to cause any undue harm on the Black’s and Whites relationships. WHAT! Who made him the spokesman for all of America. He even brought up the fact that Hurricane Katrina has divided this country and that his remarks at a comedy club somehow was reflective of this under current of emotions. While I applaud his efforts to apologize, I am not sure that the Black community feels particularly threatened by Cosmo Kramer. Best of luck in your future career in Hollywood, as this may be the last we hear from Kramer, based on his performance on Letterman.

Writing in 2007

Have you ever been writing a letter or long letter and gotten the writers cramp. There are many types of pens from ballpoint to gel pens. Most are a personal preference based on your writing style. I tend to prefer the gel pens as they are easy to write with and require less pressure when writing letters or taking notes. Plus I think that gel pens cover some of my bad penmanship. I have been told that I should have been a Dr. for the way that I write. I guess this is why I love the PC and my blogs as I can write and not be criticized for my handwriting.

Youtube wireless

In a proposed deal with Verizon wireless the ability to bring new fresh content to users cell phone is getting some attention. The fight to gain new customer in the cell phone market is fierce. Just this past weekend I saw an ad for a free Motorola Razr Phone, plus $200 back to be used in store for your purchases. With this new deal, subscribers of Verizons V Cast service will be able to view YouTube videos that have been selected by Verizon.

This helps Verizon in the lure of content for it’s customers and increases the customer base for YouTube. This agreement will allow Verizon to be the only mobile phone company to carry distribute YouTube videos for a limited time. While I have not seen the videos on a phone, I can imagine there may need to be some work done as the videos are generally not high in quality. Taking into account that you will now be viewing those on a small 2 inch screen, will be interesting to watch. I guess you don’t need high quality when you are watching a shrimp run on a treadmill. Find more great content at the Crimson Blog

I believe that with this new partnership, others will blossom. The one company that will allow their customers to use their phones video capacity, and be able to upload videos to YouTube or other video sharing services will be a huge winner. I am sure the technology exists, it is just matter of having the right phone, and the right provider. Building communities one thought at a time
