Making Sense Out of the World

Have you ever watched a movie on your computer before? I have watched a couple of movies from my desktop computer. I have a 19 inch monitor, so it’s like a small television and isn’t that bad to watch a good movie on. I know some people watch movies with much small monitors and I don’t see how they do it. I need a big screen for me to really get into a movie.

The movies I have seen were movies that were on DVD and I used the DVD player on my computer tower to watch it. I believe some websites out there allow people to watch free movies anytime they want. I would like to find some of these websites, but I don’t think I have enough computer memory to download the movies to my computer. I need a website that allows people to watch the movies from their site and you don’t have to download anything. I know there is websites you can download free movies at, but this really doesn’t help me out any.

Most of the new computers have towers with them that have a DVD player for watching movies. My friends will watch the dvd movies on their computers a lot. I usually prefer to use the DVD player for my TV to watch these types of movies. For those that know how to download movies online, they can have a huge library of movies to choose from. It usually doesn’t take long for the movies at the theater to appear online, so movie lovers can download the new movies and watch them on their computer screens. I will probably need to get a new computer before I can ever download movies from the World Wide Web, but this is something I would like to be able to do someday. It took while for countries willing to donate to the relief efforts in Haiti to begin, but things are finally starting to stabilize a bit in this tiny country. Haiti is about the size of the state of Maryland. It wouldn’t be hard for relief efforts to help this nation, but transportation has been a big concern. The earthquake damaged the main port in Haiti and makes shipping goods, equipment, and men in from the water almost impossible. New ways to deliver things in from the sea has also been set up to help things progress from this direction. The rebuilding and clean-up is still many months away before Haiti can once again get back to any type of normalcy. The good news on Saturday is that certain areas in Haiti, like the airport for instance has an abundance of supplies ready to go for distribution. Several obstacles are still in the way for getting these medical supplies, food, and water to all the parts of Haiti that need it. There is enough people on the ground in Haiti now, to start making that progress happen. More supplies and people are still on the way to Haiti, so the worse should be behind the rescue teams and nations that are currently providing the greatest relief effort that the United States has ever took part in. The 7.0 earthquake that rocked Haiti on Tuesday can now start becoming a memory for the people living in Haiti.

When the air conditioner in the car goes out, it can make driving seem like a job. I have a 1998 Buick Regal and I need a new super charger for it. Not having the super charger is causing me less horsepower and it’s also caused my belts to get loose. I will eventually need to get a new “tensioner” and two fan belts. The motor operates on a two fan belt system and replacing both belts would be a good idea, before I get stranded some where on the road.

Well St. Patrick’s Day has come and went by and the year 2009 is rolling right along. I’m sure people are not too pleased with their investments and retirement plans in the early stages of this year but life does go on. Those that might be planning for retirement soon may have to work longer than they expected, so they meet certain financial goals. This got me to thinking about all those New Years Resolutions that people make every year and if anyone is still keeping their word on them. It seems losing weight or going on a diet is what most people choose to do for their resolutions. We are a society more focused on a healthier lifestyle these days. We want to live stronger and longer than our parents did and try to avoid the health mistakes they might have made during their younger days.

We have a lot of things today that people from earlier generations never had. The technology in exercise equipment has really progressed by leaps and bounds. No fancy treadmills or memberships at the local club were available 50 years ago. A heated pool to swim in during the winter time or a neighborhood tennis court you may have access to today is really a luxury. Our parents were just trying to survive back then and they had to work all the time. Even if they would have found the time and energy to exercise, they wouldn’t have had access to a stationary bike. The bikes back then actually went somewhere when you pedaled them, but we can take a bike ride in our living rooms today. Keep this in mind when we think things are bad now and use these modern exercise tools to relieve some of that stress. This year does look tight on the wallet, but you can always take a jog around the neighborhood for free!

The Discovery Space Shuttle lifted off perfect the other day. According to NASA this was a night time launch and it was just a few minutes after their designated time for it to be considered an official night launch. The skies in Florida and Georgia were still filled with a lot of daylight and most people wouldn’t consider this a “night launch”. Originally this was going to be a true night launch and it was scheduled to take off for last Wednesday. A hydrogen tank was found leaking, so the launch date got pushed back. People living on the East Coast of the U.S. would have seen the shuttle blast off into space, if the skies would have been darker. I’m disappointed that NASA officials couldn’t have waited a little longer to send the Shuttle Discovery into orbit.

Recent maps have came out in the last several weeks showing everyone the space junk that is orbiting around the Earth right now. I’m sure there were some concerns to all the junk floating in space and NASA had to avoid any collisions with space junk. I’m not sure how long that junk will orbit the Earth, but I would imagine it’s slowly working its way down to the Earth’s surface. The atmosphere would burn the majority of it up, so not a lot of worries for those of us on the ground. I guess it is possible that some pieces might be large enough to cause damage here on Earth.

I’m glad to see the Discovery had a safe launch into space and now let’s just hope the crew returns home safely too. I just wish they would give us a true night launch, so the folks living on the East Coast could see the trail leading out of this world.
