Crawling Sites by Bots
The “bots” are robots and they are always crawling the internet for new websites and websites that have been updated. These bots need a little direction and a pathway to travel when they visit your website. A meta tag is generally what helps these bots to learn about your website, so it can index it with the search engines properly. The search engines use these bots to help determine the rankings and how sites will be listed for various search terms. A webmaster can really benefit by having a great meta tag in place, that gives these bots all the information you want them having about your website.
You can do an online search for “meta tags”, “meta tag generators”, or “free meta tag generators” and find a good one to use. I like finding the meta tag generators that allow you to put a unlimited amount of keywords in your tag. The keywords need to be related to the content of your site and just sticking popular keywords like “Brittany Spears” is not going to help. Your website will be punished if you use keywords that don’t match the content of your website, so make sure to use keywords that do relate. There is a debate on how many keywords a webmaster should add to their meta tags. I think you should choose as many as possible as long as each one of them is related to the main theme of the website. If your website isn’t that broad in categories, just select 10 or 12 good keywords to use. If you can manage to add 50 keywords to your meta tag, that should be fine too. No website should be trying to get 200 to 300 keywords in their meta tag and that would be a bit too much.
Your meta tag will probably tell the bots the language of your site, details about the webmaster, and for the indexing part or bots part of the meta tag, it should say “all”. You want all the bots coming to your website and you don’t want to bar any of them from not coming and crawling your website. A listing in a smaller search engine can be just as valuable as the ones you have with the major search engines. Allow all the bots to crawl your site and no sense having them there daily. Every 7 days is a good amount of time to invite them back and this usually allows the webmaster time to add fresh content to the site and this is very important to good rankings.
I have very limited skills on coding and creating websites, but I can easily install a meta tag to any of my websites or blogs. Generally there is a visual part to designing your website and an HTML part too. After you generate a good meta tag, you will be given a HTML code. This code needs to be copied and pasted into the HTML section of your website. The visual section will just allow the code to show up so anyone can see your meta tag that might be visiting your website. Make sure you have the meta tag code in the HTML portion of your website and nothing should be visible to the traffic visiting your site. The meta tag is for the bots crawling your website and not your visitors. A meta tag can oftern determine how well or how poorly a website gets indexed by the bots, so make sure your meta tag is a well-thought out, before adding it in.
