FTC Cracking Down on Bloggers

Breaking News! Breaking News! The FTC or Federal Trade Commission is stepping up and enforcing laws that are almost 30 years old. You would have thought after a year or two, they would have made this move, right? Well the Internet wasn’t around in the 1980′s, so they had to catch up with some things that were going on in the last decade. They now want bloggers or anyone who endorses a product or service that they took money to comment on their blogs to announce it.

It’s really crazy that the FTC would waste their time this way and I think most people use their own judgements in life and don’t take the advice of bloggers too often. Now the beef industry was in an uproar when Oprah Winfrey told people not to eat beef; due to the mad cow scares that were occurring in the news. She had to make her trips to court and fight off the beef industry. Oprah has a lot of people that follow her and she does have some power in our society. I think the FTC should mind their own business and let Oprah Winfrey and bloggers say whatever they want.

We do have a thing called “Free Speech” in this country and we should have the right to say what we want; even if it doesn mean we are saying something because someone else is paying us money to. Hey, it’s their money, let the advertisers spend it how they see best fit. Let the bloggers take it when they see it works for them, and let the people who read blogs make up their own mind if they are being mislead or not. I think the majority of us can handle a few blog posts that recommend us doing or buying a certain product or service.

A blog is like an online diary. People who have blogs are called bloggers. These bloggers should have the freedom to express their self in any fashion they want. Sure, some bloggers will have more power than other bloggers and some talk show hosts will have more power than other talk show hosts. It’s just the way the world is and no way to create a level playing field for everyone. We can encourage bloggers to use their blogs for good purposes and hope they will make the world better in some little way. When it comes down to it, there is no way to police or enforce these new FTC rules for bloggers. I fully support the freedom of speech offline and online and I support bloggers that want to take paid advertisements or the ones that just blog for free each day.
