Jeff Gordon Vs. Jimmie Johnson
Guest post from: Constance Rodgers
Who is the best NASCAR driver? This is something NASCAR fans can debate for days. The problem with this is since most NASCAR fans are so loyal to their favorite drivers, they will never look at things objectively. If you as them why they think Travis Kvapil is the best driver on the circuit, they will respond with, “Because.” That being the case, it’s about time someone looked at things logically. You can bring up Kurt and Kyle Busch, but the two real monsters are Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Some people will say that Jeff Gordon has had a more impressive career, but if you look closer, that is not the case. I have watched these two drivers on my satellite dish in Texas for many years, and I finally decided to look at some numbers.
Jimmie Johnson has been 1st in overall points in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. These four championships equal Jeff Gordon’s four championships. So, we can call that a wash. However, Jeff Gordon has 82 wins in 603 starts and Jimmie Johnson has 52 wins in 313 starts. If Jimmie Johnson had as many starts as Jeff Gordon, he would have much more wins, by about 20! Let’s look at Top 5 and Top 10 finishes. Jeff Gordon has 273 Top 5 finishes and 374 Top 10 finishes. Jimmie Johnson has 125 Top 5 finishes and 192 Top 10 finishes, but in almost half the amount of races. These numbers would also be close to a wash if they had the same amount of starts. This leaves wins as the determining stat, and Jimmie Johnson is the clear winner.
