Politics on YouTube
We do live in modern times and the politicians are obviously aware of places like MySpace and You Tube for user generated videos. They didn’t waste any time creating their own political videos at places like YouTube, so they could try and pick up some extra votes. I’m sure all the advisors to the men and women that were running for political offices encouraged them to advertise online with videos. I would say the majority of people that visit these popular places where you can upload videos are not even old enough to vote. Knowing that the majority of your target audience is under age or too young to vote; does it really make sense to campaign at You Tube?
I know there is no such thing as bad exposure or bad advertising, but the public should have reacted more about political videos online. Targeting the kids for votes and trying to influence them, seems a bit low, even for a politician seeking office. The user generated media got use for the small, local elections around the country and all the way up to the presidential elections; while no one didn’t seem to have a problem with the political videos online, unless the media found one that was really hitting below the belt. I think the videos appearing where the majority of users are in their teens and preteens weren’t the smartest way to campaign. If I was running for office I would seek to target a much older audience or at least an audience that was old enough to vote. Hopefully some of these companies and webmasters that run these popular places for uploading videos will not allow political videos from candidates in the future. I’m sure we will have the amateurs still posting ones to make fun or insult people running for political spots, but the official candidates shouldn’t be allowed to campaign at places like YouTube and My Space.
