The Godfather in Sicily
We know the movie Godfather shows scenes from the town of Corleone which is located in Sicily. At least it’s suppose to be Corleone in the movie, but the city of Corleone was just too developed to shoot scenes there in the early 1970′s. So Francis Ford Coppola and his crew had to pick other areas in Sicily to shoot the scenes of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) hiding out; while the mobsters in New York were looking for him. The two areas that actually appear in the movie are Savoca and Forza d’Agro; which are small towns located by Taomina in the Sicily region of Italy.
I would like to take a trip and see these areas that the film was shot at. The area around Taomina looks beautiful and I’m sure more people would travel there if they knew it existed. They do get tourists there and I wonder how many of these are due to the fact that the Godfather was filmed there in 1971 and was released in 1972 to the public. This movie has been like a snowball since 1972 and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I’m sure the sequels help this effect, but The Godfather has certainly staked its claim to one of the best movies ever.
I would also like to make travel plans to visit Corleone and see how modern this area really is, compared to the modern cities of the USA. If I got that close to Rome and Venice I would certainly have to stop by and see these tourist destinations for the 1st time. If you do make plans to travel to the “Godfather areas”; you will be pleased to know that the church and Bar Vitelli is still there! So you should see some recognizable images on your Sicilian vacation. Have fun if you go and be sure to send back pictures for us to see!
