The Grizzly Bear
The Mighty Grizzly Bear
A bear is just a bear unless you’re talking about the monsters that live up in Alaska that we know as the Grizzly Bear. These big creatures don’t start off that large and a new born grizzly bear usually weighs about 1 pound at birth. They do grow very quickly and become much larger than any man you have ever seen. A full grown grizzly bear can stand as tall as 10 feet high on its hind legs. You don’t ever want to try and out run one either, because they can reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour. It’s incredible to think about something so large that can travel that fast. Due to the hump on their backs, they actually run faster uphill than they can downhill.
I would like to visit Alaska and take a closer look at these beautiful creatures, but I would certainly want to be in a secure location. I don’t want to travel through the woods looking for a grizzly bear. These big bears are found in other areas of western Canada and in the northwestern part of the U.S. in states like Idaho, Washington, Wyoming, and Montana. Grizzly bears are often seen in Yellowstone National Park too. The grizzlies in the Continental United States are not as large as the ones in Alaska and Canada are and this is due to the rich protein in fish which bears love to eat. Salmon is a common fish that bears like to eat and they are easy prey during the spawning times of the year.
A polar bear can weigh more than a grizzly bear and if you went on weight, you could say that polar bears are larger than their cousin the grizzly bear. A polar bear doesn’t stand as tall as the grizzlies do and they would appear larger to people out in nature. Grizzly bears will eat just about anything and they do feed on plants and other animals. They eat moths, rodents, and even black bears if they are around. There really isn’t a creature living today that is too big or too small for a grizzly bear to eat. I guess a blue whale would be a challenge, but if it was during the fall time of the year, a couple of grizzly bears could choke down a full size blue whale in just a few short days. Grizzlies eat a tremendous amount of food before they hibernate for the winter and the more fat they can store, will be the longer they can stay snug from the cold arctic air.
I’m not sure how many grizzlies are left in the world but I’m sure their numbers are pretty low. I hope man leaves them enough space, so these mammoth creatures can continue to thrive on our planet. The lion is known as the king of the jungle, but I can’t see any land creature being more worthy of a crown than the all mighty grizzly bear.
